Division : Division is the mathematical operation that divides objects equally into groups. More generally $x\div y$ is defined as the number that if multiplied by $y$ equals $x.$
Favorable outcome : In a random experiment the favorable outcomes are the outcomes of the event of which we want to calculate the probability. For example if we want to calculate the probability of throwing an even number with a dice the favorable outcomes are 2, 4 and 6.
Number : A number $x$ is a mathematical symbol representing a quantity.
Possible outcome : Any outcome of a random experiment.
Probability : A probability is a number between 0 and 1 that describes how likely an outcome is. For discrete events that are equally likely the probability can be calculated by dividing the number of favorable outcomes by the number of possible outcomes.
Reduced fraction : A reduced fraction (or simplified fraction or fraction in simplified form or fraction in simplest form) is a fraction $\frac{a}{b}$ such that $a$ and $b$ do not have any common factors bigger than 1. For example the reduced fraction of the fraction $\frac{4}{6}$ is $\frac{2}{3}.$
What is the probability that of two thrown coins at least one lands on heads? (Answer as a simplified fraction a/b.)
Half : A Half is the number equal to $\frac{1}{2}=0.5.$
One eighth : One eighth is the number $\frac{1}{8}=0.125.$
Quarter : One quarter is the number $\frac{1}{4}=0.25.$
Third : A third either refers to the third object in an ordering or to the number $\frac{1}{3}=0.\overline{3}.$
Lester eats half of a cake on the first day. On the second day he eats half of what is left after the first day. On the third day he eats half of what is left after the second day and so on. How much cake is left after day 3 (Answer as a simplified fraction a/b)?
Addition : Addition is the mathematical operation that describes increasing a number by an amount equal to a second number. The mathematical symbol for addition is the plus sign $+.$ The term addition is also used for a generalization of this basic operation on numbers to functions, vectors and matrices.
Center : The center of a circle is the unique point in the circle, such that all points on the boundary of the circle have a constant distance equal to the radius from that point. The center of a regular polygon is the point that has equal distance from all its corners.
Diagonal : A diagonal in a quadrilateral is the line segment between a corner and its opposing corner. A diagonal in a cube (or rectangular prism) is the line segment between two corners that are not part of a same face.
Equation : An equation is a mathematical statement in which two expressions are written with an equal sign in between. A solution of an equation is a set of variables that makes the statement a true statement.
Square : A square is a quadrilateral with four right angles and four equal length sides. A square is a special case of a rectangle and a special case of a rhombus.
Sum : A sum is the result of an addition.
A 3×3 magic square is a 3×3 square containing the numbers between 1 and 9 so that the sum of the numbers in every row, in every column and in the two diagonals is always the same. What is the number in the center of any such magic square? See the picture for a 4×4 magic square. Everything adds up to 34 there.
